Friends over food. Food over friends - Indonesia 2025

How fortunate I have been to have friends and family that were willing to spare their time, to squeeze their busy packed schedule to meet up!

Life in Asia can be very busy and pack1ed on day to day basis but sure is they know how to enjoy life with a good (not always healthy) food

Nasi Padang

Nasi Cumi Madura

Nasi Pecel

Surabayan food. Can you spot which one is the clam satay?

Nasi Ketjombrang. It is a new popular dish

Fried duck, meatball, Dragonfruit juice, avocado juice.

kol nenek (water snails)

Nasi gudeg

Kepiting Telur Asin (salted egg crab)

(really early) Morning walk - Indonesia 2025

So, I promised to do more self care during my visit. Meaning maintaining my active lifestyle.

Glad that met my second degree cousin in the Imlek dinner eve. It got me connected with my other friend. Himself, has been into more active lifestyle to have a better Glucose Index level and prevent a depression to crawl in, which he managed to get out from.

Would you like to join tomorrow,  though we usually have it on Saturday and Sunday morning. We walk to that property.

Sure why not? What time?

4:30am.

What?!?!
In my climatized Kiwi mind, I need sun! What is a morning without a sun! But I said yes anyhow. He'd pick me up 4:15am. Though I was still in my jet lag, my body clock was in NZ time, woke up at 3am. Yet I still need a bit of light to wake me up, the real sun light does wonder to the life on earth, really.

Met the other 2 girls, one has been one of my dear friend. We hugged, I was so touched. Not many of us has this hugging habit. She looked really well, after all she went through. The last time we met was before I applied for visa to NZ? She just had her miracle baby that they have been waiting for years through in vitro fertilization.

This east Surabaya residential area, is one of crazy rich complex. They keep on opening new cluster, new housings, new malls. I was impressed really. Whatever they touch turns into gold. But I don't want to entertain how those business was being built and made. I remember, one of an expat teacher squealing "Who lives there??? The Queen???"

Just had one tiny house in the picture, and the bigger size of the housese were pretty common around some main road. And I say to myself "Who lives there? The Queen?"

We walk pretty relaxed pace. Even some people were not running but jogging. Everything was slower compared to people walking and running in Conrwall Park. But I may understand why, the humidity and heat soon froze me of doing anything excessive.

7am, we finished our route. 6 km according to MapMyWalk apps. We kept on talking, especially the other three. What a release of stress of the week!

When we walked back just before 7am, the traffic was crazy, that was the time students to get into their classes. There are 3 big campuses for elementary and secondary near by. And the heat has started to sting. Now I know 5 am is perfect for a morning walk!

Indonesia Visit 2025 - Lunar New Year

Imlek, how we just call it. Another reason to visit Indo during this time :) to see the whole family (whoever left in town).

Home cooking! Finally!!

Our family mun tofu. not spicy. I can cook it myself, but it is always nice to have someone with more decades of experience cook it for you

While I remembered I still joined a class in the gym, I left earlier to join the dinner on the Lunar New Year Eve. It has been known as the most "sacred" feast in the family.
Full of seafood. It is home cooked.

The dishes during Imlek

All red t-shirts. Fun and hot.

In the evening, my cousins said oh we used to go to cinema after this. And what a brilliant choice to watch a horror movies. But because Song Hye-kyo is in it, I agreed. Otherwise I'd go for Paddington! Who wants to watch horror in a nice (hot) day? They do, majority wins.

Indonesia Visit 2025 - Landing

Few colleagues were more excited than me. I feel them, I feel the same way, more excited if someone will be on a trip. But, this is not a trip, it was a visit due my dad's health condition. So I cancelled the 2 weeks me time I wanted to take, tripping around Thai, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam (while with Indo passport we do not need visa).

But yeah, we can always see the other page of the world. Thank you colleagues, now I am writing a blog again, after...12 years....LMAO.

LANDING

I was so pumped that Air New Zealand updates their direct flight to Denpasar all year long, not long after they resumed the flight once the border opened for the world on 2023. During that time the direct flight was only on March - October. I had to endure the long journey by transiting in Aussie before to another airport then Surabaya airport.

Surabaya as the second largest city (and economy power) in Indonesia, is always left out for international flight matter. Jakarta, as the capital and economy center wins everything. And the proximity to Bali made it even shone out. "Where are you from?" "Indonesia" "Oh..." Before they puzzled even more where the heck is that, "Do you know Bali?" "Ah! Yes, yes."  "Bali is in Indonesia, my province is just next to it" Period.

Landed 11pm Bali time, after 7hours 40 minutes flight, after 7 hours working. Waiting for my luggage was the longest time felt like ever. Was it me being too tired or they were just so ever slow. I used Go-jek again with the help of the staff in airport. And not long, being in hotel. I knew it would be a "old" villa bungalow type of hotel. NO LIFT! Fortunately a security staff was assigned to help me carrying the 20 kg luggage up. Tried to get sleep but awaken few times. And finally 6am, morning has broken, birds chirping and all.

I woke up and walked to the beach which was just 3 minutes walk from hotel

Saw the plastic rubbish, felt saddened and did not feel like dipping my feet into the water. Went back to hotel, by the pool, took a dip relaxing, Enjoying this tropical sensation. While discussing with my friend where to for breakfast.

We traveled to Kerobokan to find this yummy Balinese mixed rice :) happy tummy, happy us.
I was grateful my friend (former colleague in Surabaya) always has a good recommendation on food, places to see. She is the ultimate local guide!

Lunch was Nasi Babi Guling.

Bigul or Babi Guling. Non halal and spicy

Back to airport for local flight to Surabaya. Definitely not too excited, I can feel the heat and sweat already.

The flight was 30 minutes late, the aircraft was parking in the middle of somewhere, we reached there by bus. But the aircon was working, thank God. A Cindo (Chinese indonesia, like me) lady argued with the flight attendant just because she was being requested politely to put her bag to the cabin compartment, because they sit next to emergency door. What headless people had to argue about it. I stared at them annoyed, lucky them I sat behind not in front. I almost stood out and told them off just shut up and put your bag up there. It is just 45 minutes flight, no one will take your bag!

Dear God, I adjusted to the heat automatically.

The saga continues. While waiting for my luggage, these 2 cindo out of no where came and stood in front of me. I spare their lives by walking to other corner. Welcome to Surabaya, full of cindo and OKB with no manner.

I m quite surprised to see these grade 3 kids was so excited with their Xmas drawings. And they drew creative stuffs!
Comparing to them if I ever given "Free drawing about Xmas" I d just strolling, doodling dunno what to do. Maybe nothing s so fun for me about this festive season.
Well, enjoy their drawings =] Still have many in store.

our big gulp

If american in american serial, always seen drinking soda [which I have found nothing fun about it since a kid].
The europian drinking beers [especially germans]
We....
proudly
drinking
sweet tea.

Everyway u turn, rich or medium, young or adult, holding this tea big glass.
Only 5K idr....okay u may say, 3K idr u can get 25 pcs bags of teh celup. But hey...it  is convenient already, I m so content with this product.

The tea producer who had this idea is truly genius :D
I usually go for teh gopek brand. Tong Tji is famous for its jasmine tea. Me n my cozin had bad experience with this brand, got stomachhache after having this cold jasmine tea, maybe too acid for my stomach or the tea was just not fresh. But it is not the brand, now just look for a crowded stall, there u can find the tea is always fresh :)

"One grande jasmine tea without ice please,,, n less sugar please."
"Do you want it warm or normal?"
"ah, warm please"
And i m enjoying to the last sip for the next hour :D What a content !

another shot : fried rice

I haven't managed to make a yummy simple javanese fried rice. Which I believe I miss one ingridient: shrimp's head and or terasi. That one thing makes the street fried rice yumm....

So I tried another simple white fried rice this noon.
- 1 clove of garlic
- 2-3 cloves of scallion
- margarine
- salt n pepper
- salt sauce [ see...i mix it with hongkong fried rice]

And top it with quick melt cheese in the scrambled egg.

I also sprinkled dried herbs [sort of oregano]...
And...the result is not bad....
The fusion is not the result of creativity but more of by "I want a good taste, don't fail me"
[cheese barely fail me, last time I made aglio olio n just sprinkled on it, n taste good]

Picture? Sorry, too hungy to take pic.....
